WA legislative update

Euthanasia laws may be debated by WA State Parliament this year, with incoming Greens (WA) MLC Robin Chapple considering introducing a Bill.Premier Geoff Gallop claims that Labor would allow a debate and vote on euthanasia if one of the other parties puts a Bill before Parliament. The previous government did not allow debate on the issue, and refused to

consider a Bill proposed by Democrats MLC Norm Kelly.Mr Kelly lost his Upper House seat at the last election.

Mr Chapple has indicated he wants community consultation and there is a possibility that Mr Kelly's bill may even be reintroduced. This would grant legalised physician-assisted suicide for

people with a terminal illness provided the patient had received all possible information about treatment and palliative care and was not suffering from depression and had been examined by more than one doctor. Labor's constitution guarantees its MPs a conscience vote on euthanasia and abortion.
