Voluntary euthanasia and medical
associations: an update
In the March 2001 edition of the VE Bulletin the continued opposition
to voluntary euthanasia by most medical
associations was challenged. It highlighted the inconsistency of support
for a neutral position on therapeutic
abortion, while adopting an oppositional stance to voluntary euthanasia.
SAVES aims to promote a neutral
position through dialogue with the Australian Medical Association,
at both the federal and state level.
It is therefore pleasing to read an editorial in the April 2001 Faculty
/ Training Programme News, by Dr David
Tye, Chairmand of the SA and NT Faculty of the Royal Australian Colllege
of General Practitioners. He argues
that a position of neutrality is appropriate in a democratic society,
claiming:
The College will not support the bill, nor will it actively object.
It is properly the parliament as the voice of the
people that must make this decision. I would encourage everyone to
read the bill and approach your
parliamentarian if you have a strong view.
Well stated Dr Tye.
