The Dignity in Dying Bill continues its ‘ponderous way’ through the legislative process in both the Legislative Council and House of Assembly. The issue is now entering its eighth year of continual debate. At no stage has the bill ‘stalled’, but has simply been overtaken by the end of parliamentary terms and two elections. The need to follow parliamentary process means that instead of the bill continuing where it left off, it has to be reintroduced each time and go back to square one. This means for example, that although the Legislative Council had passed the first three clauses last year it now must pass them again before proceeding on to the other clauses.
