Stand up (or lie down?) and be
counted
Norma Gonninan, a longstanding and very committed member of SAVES, went
into hospital recently for minor surgery. She took with her a VE Society
car sticker and posted it on her bedside locker. It raised a few eyebrows
among visitors, but if anyone queried it she replied that if they knew
nothing about it they should not criticise, but let her explain it to them
- if they would listen. Some did and went away thoughtful. Norma was surprised
how little understanding they had. But when her doctor came, he smiled
and said, "Now I know where I stand, don't I?". The nurses were intrigued
and expressed no opposition, only disappointment when Norma removed the
sticker in anticipation of leaving.
Norma said later, "When you are my age you can get away with that sort
of thing. I don't know how it would have gone down if I'd been much younger."
Maybe so, but is it really a matter of age?
