1000 people have now attended EXIT (Aust) Workshops
Dr Philip Nitschke of EXIT (Aust) provides the following information for SAVES members :

The 1000th person to attend an EXIT workshop on voluntary euthanasia attended the recent series organised in Queensland’s Gold Coast. These workshops are open to all those interested in the various aspects of voluntary euthanasia and the program has been in operation now for three years. Workshops run at regular intervals in all Australian capitals with three this year to be held in Adelaide at the Fullarton Centre on Fullarton Road. Workshops are conducted by EXIT (Australia) director, Dr Philip Nitschke.

Workshops last for 3 hours and in that time groups of less than 20 discuss topics that include general issues such as, the law and VE, advance directives and medical power of attorney, depression and psychiatric illness and palliative care. Following a half hour break, specific practical issues are discussed that include, slow euthanasia or the doctrine of double effect, drugs used for voluntary euthanasia, non-drug methods such as the plastic exit bag and carbon monoxide, and the workshops finish with a discussion of issues such as death certificates, inquests, coronials and autopsies.

A handbook covering these issues is provided to participants and a casual atmosphere maintained so that those attending feel comfortable about asking the questions that are of specific importance to them. Those attending are encouraged to ask any questions they like. If there are legal reasons why questions cannot be answered, arrangements can be made to speak privately at a later time.

Interested members of SAVES are invited to attend the workshops. Attendance is free, but donations are asked for to cover the expenses of program. The average donation of those attending is $50.

Recently we have linked attendance at such workshops as a necessary prerequisite for the acquisition of the new Aussie EXIT bags. Monoxide generators, also under development, will be controlled in the same manner.
